1st Annual Heritage Fair in Vernon, BC

The Greater Vernon Museum and Archives together with School District #22 Vernon, collaborated today to present the area's first ever Heritage Fair. As a Director of the Vernon Chamber of Commerce, I was honored to be asked to judge - and really had no idea what to expect. There were over 30 judges, and we were given a very intensive set of criteria to apply to our task - and a list of four projects to evaluate and interview the students who were responsible for the creations.

The age range on the forms indicated grades 3 - 9. I had the pleasure of interviewing youngsters from the 3rd and 4th grade. Each of the projects I was assigned came from students who attended JW Inglis Elementary School in Lumby. It was really a great morning! I totally enjoyed interacting with the kids. I was amazed at the work they had done and the knowledge they shared. It was great to see a student fair that targeted the historical / social aspects of education. It was very interesting to see the different approaches - and the merging of the iBook presentation along with the Posterboard and old fashioned "cut and paste."

I congratulate all the students on the work they did to prepare for this day, and wish those selected to head on to the next level of the valley wide fair all the best. Great job and a hats off to the teachers and the Museum staff and volunteers who put this fledgling event together. I hope to be asked back for next year!
